I was initially sceptical of this new technology, especially when I discovered that a colleague was paying a penny short of £20 a month to use it… but recently I have very much become a convert and am myself subscribed to chatGTP PLUS. Watching a revision clinic class hear the computer explain oligopoly in the context of Fortnite or corporate cultures in relation to a gym was great “that’s the first time I’ve understood that”…
Having conversations with my computer in front of the class was also an experience that probably had them questioning me – but definitely proved entertaining and had them listening, questioning and prompting.
When I watched my colleague get a group of pupils to run businesses or economies through simulations that he has written, I wanted to know how he’d done it – and then when I realised this was doable, I wanted to write my own. There are a few games I have written for classes in the resources section, they may not be perfect – but they have driven engagement, as well as focusing class discussion and engagement in thinking about the concepts being looked at.
I didn’t think I would want to embrace it but I have… notebookLM creating podcasts on topics, multiple choice tests from the spec, summaries of key topics or resources on demand from chatGTP. Who knows how far this technology will grow but as a new colleague said recently… “I’m glad I’m joining teaching now with this technology available to me rather than 20 years ago when you did!”
